Beatričė Narbutaitė

Beatričė Narbutaitė

Beatričė Lithuanian family lineage's calls back to the heartlands of Kupiškis, a place famous for its unique and captivating wedding traditions. These time-honoured practices are now recognised as part of the Lithuanian Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Through these antiquated rituals, an atmosphere of festivity and theatricality intertwines to vividly portray life's most momentous transition. Commonly described as the happiest day of one's lifetime, these ceremonies weave together both sides of the human emotional spectrum, from the heights of elation to the poignant depths of lament, sorrow, and grief. The echoes of postmodern dilemmas are felt through the tension between marriage and love, often pragmatic choices, and the usually limited autonomy afforded to the bride. This rich history is eternally preserved through traditions, rituals, and human emotions captured in photographic negatives and printed images from the 80s and 90s, alongside other documentary sources.
